Obituary of Richard J Spear

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard “Dick” J. Spear on Wednesday, February 7, 2024. Richard was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Richard was born on February 27th, 1938 to Edwin Carlton and Beatrice Pringle Spear. He is survived by his devoted wife, Susan Heard Spear, whom he loved deeply, and who took great care of him to the end. He is survived, too, by their special dog, Spencer. He is survived by his two sons, Peter of Hudson, New York, and Jeffrey of Concord, New Hampshire, and his grandchildren, Will, Alexandra, and Iris, who brought immense happiness to his later years. Richard was the cherished brother of Norma Frevert and Margaret Hanlon, friend to their husbands, Bob and Larry, and adoring uncle to his nieces, Lynn Frevert Wigley, Brenda Frevert James, Sharon Frevert Skeen, Linda Hanlon Watson, Karen Hanlon Fleming and his nephew, Jim Hanlon. Richard served as a helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War as a member of the 33rd Transportation Company. During his service, he was exposed to Agent Orange, which had lasting effects on his health. “Dick” was a good friend, a natural athlete, a successful salesman, a loving father, and a frustrated, yet loyal, golfer. He had a light and loving spirit, always with a twinkle in his eyes. As we mourn our loss, let’s celebrate his loving and playful spirit. A Memorial service to honor Richard's life will be held Saturday, May 11, 2024, 11:00 a.m. at White Haven Memorial Park with military honors. Please Meet at the front gate to process to the gravesite. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Veteran’s Outreach Center, 447 South Avenue, Rochester, Ny 14620 or Lollypop Farm, 99 Victor Road, Fairport, NY 14450. May his spirit find peace, and the memories of his laughter and love comfort those who grieve his loss.
